Rumesh Pathirage wins Lausanne Diamond League javelin title

Sri Lankan javelin thrower Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the men’s javelin event at the Lausanne Diamond League, narrowly defeating India’s Neeraj Chopra by just nine centimetres. Pathirage secured the title with a throw of 88.14m, while Chopra recorded a season-best throw of 88.05m to take second place.

Chopra, who has been working his way back from a lower-back injury, briefly held the lead during the second round with his 88.05m effort. However, Pathirage reclaimed the top position in the third round. This victory marks Pathirage’s third consecutive win over Chopra in 2026, following previous encounters at the Doha Diamond League and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Grenada’s Anderson Peters finished third with a throw of 86.69m. Chopra’s performance in Lausanne is seen as a significant positive for his momentum heading into the upcoming Asian Games and helps improve his standing in the Diamond League season points table, moving him into the top five.
