Neeraj Chopra Wins Silver at Commonwealth Games, AFI Chair Urges Celebration
India's javelin star Neeraj Chopra secured a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a season‑best throw of 86.48 m, marking his return after a year‑long lower‑back injury. Athletics Federation of India (AFI) selection committee chairman Adille Sumariwalla praised the achievement, saying silver medals should be celebrated and reminding the public of Chopra’s Olympic gold (Tokyo 2021), junior world record (2016) and multiple Asian and Commonwealth titles.
Sumariwalla added that Chopra will next compete at the Lausanne Diamond League on Aug 21, the Diamond League Finals in Brussels on Sep 4‑5, and is expected to qualify for the Asian Games later in the year. The remarks aim to shift focus from fitness concerns to the athlete’s consistent performance on the global stage.
