Negeri Sembilan police investigate student death at sports school
Police in Negeri Sembilan are investigating the death of a junior student at a sports school in Kuala Pilah. The victim, Idlan Fareeq Shahril, was found unconscious in a dormitory and later pronounced dead at Tuanku Ampuan Najihah Hospital. Preliminary reports suggest the student may have been assaulted by seniors after being caught vaping by a warden on September 23.
Authorities have arrested and remanded two Form 4 students to assist in the murder investigation. While an initial post-mortem at Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital was inconclusive regarding the exact cause of death, investigators have recorded statements from 68 witnesses, including students, teachers, and hostel wardens. The victim reportedly had a history of asthma.
In response to the incident, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has ordered an immediate audit of the school’s safety compliance. The case has renewed concerns regarding school bullying in Malaysia, noting that while reported bullying cases fluctuated between 2024 and 2025, there is a lack of official national data specifically categorizing deaths resulting from bullying.
