São Paulo Creche Baby Death Triggers Probe and Possible De‑accreditation

A 1‑year‑4‑month‑old baby, Abdoulaye Dieng, died on 22 July 2026 after his head became trapped for about six minutes between a metal grate and a wall in the Creche Luz do Brás, located in the Brás district of central São Paulo. Video from the facility shows the child struggling before staff intervened and took him to the UPA Mooca, where he was pronounced dead.

The child’s parents are Senegalese immigrants. Police Civil opened a culpable‑homicide investigation, questioning five employees—including the director and coordinator—while the Institute of Criminalistics and the Institute of Medical‑Legal examine the scene and the body. The São Paulo Municipal Education Secretary announced a possible administrative procedure that could de‑accredit the organization that manages the creche. The family was initially told the child had merely “passed ill,” a communication now under scrutiny. The funeral was held at the Islamic cemetery in Guarulhos.

The Education Department pledged support to the family and said it will cooperate fully with the ongoing investigations.
