Negotino Power Plant in North Macedonia saved state millions, expert report says
A 2024 expert report commissioned by the former director of the Negotino thermal power plant concluded that the fuel oil supplied by RK Makedonija met quality standards, did not cause air or environmental pollution, and saved the Macedonian government millions of euros compared with purchasing electricity on the Hungarian market. The report found that activating the plant during the energy crisis from December 2021 to April 2023 was economically justified, resulting in lower electricity costs for consumers.
The plant, built in 1978 with a 210 MW capacity, had been a cold reserve since 2009 and operated as an additional power source during the crisis. Monthly tables in the report detail electricity production, fuel consumption and oil deliveries for 2022‑2023, showing that oil supplies matched contractual agreements.
