UEFA investigates FC Barcelona over Negreira case
UEFA has reopened its investigation into the ‘Negreira case’ following new material submitted by Real Madrid. The probe focuses on payments made by FC Barcelona to José María Enríquez Negreira, the former vice president of Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees, between 2001 and 2018. The disputed sums exceed seven million euros.
Under Article 4 of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations, the governing body has the authority to ban clubs from European competitions for up to one season if they are found to be involved, directly or indirectly, in activities aimed at manipulating match outcomes. While Barcelona maintains the payments were for technical consultancy and reports on referees, UEFA’s disciplinary process can proceed independently of Spanish criminal court rulings.
The investigation has sparked intense debate regarding sporting justice and institutional influence within Spanish football. While no definitive verdict has established that matches were bought, the potential for severe sporting sanctions remains a central concern for the club’s future participation in European tournaments.
