Neha Bora rejects peace bond following Delhi High Court dismissal
All India Students' Association (AISA) president Neha Bora appeared before a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court in Delhi on Saturday, following the Delhi High Court's dismissal of her petition challenging a police notice. The notice, issued under Section 126 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), requires Bora to furnish a personal bond of Rs 10,000 with one surety to maintain peace during an inquiry.
Bora has refused to sign the bond, arguing that such measures are being “weaponised” to suppress democratic dissent and peaceful protests. She questioned the rationale of the notice, asking, “Whose peace am I being asked to keep?” and asserting that the right to question authority is fundamental to democracy.
The legal proceedings stem from the October 16 ‘Tiranga Assembly’ protest, during which Bora and others were detained for allegedly violating police restrictions. Following High Court orders, the Delhi Police provided Bora with the documents used as the basis for the show-cause notice. The next hearing is scheduled for late October, by which time Bora must submit her formal response.
