Neighborhood stores lead Colombia's retail market with 37% of sales

Neighborhood stores remain the leading consumer channel in Colombia, accounting for 37% of all mass consumption product sales. According to a study by market intelligence firm NielsenIQ (NIQ), these traditional micro-businesses serve as a primary indicator for the national retail market.

Rodolfo Aguilar Landín, NIQ's Latin American Director for Sales and TradeHub, noted a very high correlation between neighborhood store performance and the total national market. He stated that when a product performs well or poorly in these stores, it reflects the overall market trend in Colombia.

Despite competition from hard discounters, supermarkets, e-commerce, and social media, neighborhood stores show high customer retention. While 73% of store customers also shop at hard discounters, the traditional stores maintain a stronger hold on consumers due to proximity, small purchase sizes, and flexible hours.

Colombia's 453,750 neighborhood stores represent 13.1% of all such businesses in Latin America, ranking third in regional participation behind Brazil and Mexico. The study also revealed that 92% of Colombians shop at these stores, with average monthly sales increasing by 13.8% over the last four years.
