Neil Druckmann departs creative direction of HBO's The Last of Us

Neil Druckmann, creator of the original 'The Last of Us' video game, has confirmed his departure from the creative direction of the HBO television series. He stated in an interview with The Washington Post that neither he nor Naughty Dog had any creative involvement in the production of the third season, leaving Craig Mazin as the sole showrunner.

Druckmann noted that while Naughty Dog remains the custodian of the intellectual property, the studio is refocusing on game development, including a new science fiction title titled 'Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet'.

Additionally, the third season is expected to be the final installment of the HBO adaptation. Production for the third season began in March and is slated to conclude in November, with a projected release in 2027. Despite the conclusion of the series, Druckmann mentioned that there are 'a couple of projects' in development within the 'The Last of Us' universe.
