Jamundí: Attack on former mayor leaves security escort dead
An armed attack targeting former Jamundí mayor Andrés Felipe Ramírez in Valle del Cauca resulted in the death of his security escort, Felipe López Gutiérrez. The incident occurred on the night of Friday, October 16, at a commercial establishment owned by the former mayor's family in the La Esmeralda neighborhood.
According to reports, two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on the security detail. While Ramírez emerged uninjured, López Gutiérrez, a member of the National Protection Unit (UNP), succumbed to his wounds after being transported to a local hospital.
In response, Governor Dilian Francisca Toro announced a reward of up to 100 million pesos for information leading to the capture of those responsible. The Colombian government and the United Nations have condemned the attack, calling for thorough investigations into the perpetrators. The Defensoría del Pueblo has also urged authorities to investigate potential links between this assassination attempt and previous threats against the former mayor's political circle.
