Nel and Rheinmetall partner on decentralized e-fuels in Norway

Nel ASA and Rheinmetall have signed a non-binding letter of intent to explore the decentralized production of synthetic fuels (e-fuels) using renewable hydrogen. The collaboration aims to enhance energy security and military logistics for defense forces and critical infrastructure providers.

The project intends to use modular plants to produce fuel locally, where it is needed, rather than relying on centralized refineries that are vulnerable to disruption. By combining Nel’s electrolysis technology with Rheinmetall’s synthesis reactors, the companies aim to create synthetic diesel and aviation fuel that meets NATO standards. This process uses electricity, water, and CO2 to create products compatible with existing engines without requiring modifications.

Norway has been identified as the starting point for this initiative due to its energy landscape. Rheinmetall’s broader strategy involves establishing a network of several hundred production sites to strengthen Europe’s fuel readiness during times of crisis or war.
