Nelio Biedermann releases ‘Lázár’, a saga of Hungarian aristocratic decline

Swiss author Nelio Biedermann has released his second novel, ‘Lázár’, a family saga that traces the decline of a Hungarian aristocratic lineage across more than half a century. The narrative spans from the final days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire through the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, examining how major 20th-century historical shifts—including the rise of Nazism, the Holocaust, and Soviet occupation—impacted the private lives and domestic rituals of a noble family.

Biedermann, born in 2003, focuses on intimate details such as household organization and domestic rituals rather than grand political battles to illustrate the era's decay. The story follows the life of Lajos von Lázár, a fragile character born with transparent skin, amidst a backdrop of family secrets, madness, and a crumbling social order. The work has drawn comparisons to the historical family sagas of Joseph Roth and Thomas Mann.
