Nello Musumeci warns of low risk perception in Italy

Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci addressed the ANCE ‘Città nel futuro’ event, highlighting a lack of risk perception among the Italian population. He described a cultural tendency toward fatalism, noting that citizens often rely on prayer or superstition rather than proactive preparation.

Musumeci cited the Campi Flegrei region, where 500,000 people live amidst volcanic, seismic, and bradyseismic risks, as a primary example. He noted that participation in safety drills increased from 150 to 1,000 people between the first and second sessions, suggesting a need for greater public awareness and a shift in the national cultural mindset regarding safety and responsibility.
