Nello Scavo warns of link between conflict and global hunger

Nello Scavo, a special correspondent for Avvenire and author of the preface to the CESVI Report on the Global Hunger Index 2026, has highlighted the interconnected nature of war, food crises, and climate change.

Scavo emphasized that conflicts are rarely simple, involving complex webs of business and interests that ultimately impact human lives. Drawing from recent experiences in South Sudan and Somalia, he warned that the human stories behind these crises—such as families displaced by conflict or resource scarcity—often risk being forgotten by the international community.

He noted that in Somalia, conflict and climate change are driving a resurgence of hunger and instability. Scavo cautioned against the tendency of journalists and politicians to look away once a conflict appears to have ended, suggesting that ignoring these evolving crises can lead to unforeseen global consequences, such as increased migration.
