Nelson and Winnie Mandela: A marriage shaped by apartheid

Nelson and Winnie Mandela married on June 14, 1958, in Bizana, Transkei, and had two daughters, Zenani and Zindziswa. Their marriage was defined by Nelson Mandela’s 27-year imprisonment following his 1964 life sentence, during which the couple lived apart.

While Nelson was incarcerated, Winnie Mandela emerged as a prominent political figure in the anti-apartheid resistance, facing her own persecution, detentions, and confinement. Despite their shared struggle, the long separation and the divergent paths their political lives took eventually strained their relationship after they were reunited.
