Nelson community sees rise in library usage and seasonal events
The Nelson Public Library has reported a 50 per cent increase in foot traffic for the first half of 2026, with approximately 90,000 visits recorded between January and June. New library memberships have also risen by 10 per cent.
Chief Librarian Laura Harris attributed the growth to the rising cost of living and a demand for free community spaces. Harris noted that residents are increasingly utilizing the library as a way to access books and information without the need to purchase items at cafes or restaurants. Recent changes to improve accessibility include the removal of overdue fees and allowing outside food and drinks in the facility.
In local community news, Nelson is hosting its final night market of the season on August 21 along Baker Street. The event features over 100 local vendors and live entertainment. Market coordinator Allison Schlosser noted the event is free to attend and aims to bring the community together. While the night market concludes, local farmers markets will continue through September and October.
