Nelson Hospital begins construction on new 128-bed inpatient building

Construction has officially commenced on a new 128-bed inpatient building at Nelson Hospital. Health Minister Simeon Brown announced the sod-turning ceremony, marking a significant milestone for the Nelson and Marlborough communities.

The project aims to address pressure from a growing and ageing population and a shortage of beds that has impacted elective treatments. The new facility will provide at least 41 additional adult medical and surgical beds, an Acute Assessment Unit, a patient transit lounge, a pharmacy, and rehabilitation services.

Initial work involving service diversions, earthworks, and piling is expected to take approximately 12 months. The building is projected to begin rising on the site in late 2027. Additionally, modules for a new 28-bed rapid-build inpatient ward have arrived on site to increase capacity while groundwork continues.
