Nelson Mandela Day Marks Global Film Tribute on July 18
The United Nations‑designated International Nelson Mandela Day is observed each year on 18 July. Established in 2009, the day marks Mandela’s birth and invites people to spend 67 minutes (one minute for each year of his fight against apartheid) on a charitable act.
To honour the occasion, Cine Ninja curated a selection of seven films, series and documentaries that explore Mandela’s life, the anti‑apartheid struggle and his legacy. The lineup includes the biopic “Mandela: Longo Caminho para a Liberdade” (2013) starring Idris Elba, available on streaming services such as Prime Video and Apple TV, alongside other titles that portray his early years, legal career, 27 years of imprisonment, Nobel Peace Prize win and his presidency that introduced the 1996 Constitution and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The programme aims to keep Mandela’s commitment to equality and social justice visible, encouraging audiences worldwide to remember his contributions and continue the fight against racism.
