Nelson Mandela Day prompts prison reform pledges in Colombia and Senegal

On July 18, Colombia marked International Nelson Mandela Day by drawing attention to persistent violations of prisoners' human rights, particularly severe overcrowding in detention centers and temporary facilities. Advocates highlighted the need for political will to reduce the chronic congestion that has worsened since 2020.

On July 23, Senegal also observed Mandela Day at the Liberté 6 penal camp, using the event to reaffirm commitments to dignified, rehabilitative detention. Authorities announced a medium‑term action plan to streamline pre‑trial detention and decompress prisons, aligning with the Justice Ministry’s 2025‑2029 strategic plan.

Both countries linked the celebration of Mandela’s legacy to ongoing reforms aimed at improving prison conditions and respecting the intrinsic dignity of detainees.
