Nelson Mandela International Day observed with prison reintegration program in Burkina Faso and tribute in France

In Kourittenga province of Burkina Faso, the provincial high‑commissioner Moctar Ilboudo presided over a ceremony on 18 July 2026 in Koupéla to mark Nelson Mandela International Day. The event highlighted the role of agricultural prison centres in providing professional training and food self‑sufficiency for inmates. Attendees received kits and training in traditional cloth weaving, metal and wood carpentry, and awards were presented to partners supporting inmate welfare. A prisoner representative cited chronic problems such as unreliable electricity, aging water tanks and the lack of a vehicle for social‑health services, urging NGOs and authorities to aid reintegration, facilitate community work and consider sentence reductions.

In Creil, northern France, the 10 May Association and SOS Racism organised a tribute on the same day, attended by local officials including deputy mayor Thierno Diallo. The city’s bridge named after Nelson Mandela was referenced as a lasting symbol of his anti‑apartheid legacy. Speakers emphasized Mandela’s enduring message of freedom and equality, and Central African singer‑songwriter Théo Mobanza performed a rendition of “What a Wonderful World”.
