Nelson Vassalo charged with terrorism in Molotov cocktail attack
Nelson Vassalo faces charges for 10 crimes, including terrorist offenses, attempted murder, arson, and illegal possession of a weapon, following a Molotov cocktail attack during the ‘Marcha pela Vida’ in March 2026.
The Public Ministry alleges the attack was premeditated, noting that Vassalo purchased gasoline and prepared the device earlier that day. Prosecutors argue the act was driven by far-left political-ideological convictions intended to terrorize those defending views on abortion, euthanasia, and assisted suicide, thereby threatening the constitutional right to peaceful demonstration.
Vassalo’s defense denies that the device was thrown intentionally at people and maintains there was no ideological motivation. His lawyer stated that while Vassalo admits to an ‘unreflective and irresponsible act’ and expresses deep regret, he did not intend to target participants. As the defense will not request an instruction phase, the case is set to proceed directly to trial.
