Nelson Virreyra apprehended in Cochabamba over 53-day blockade investigation
Nelson Virreyra Meneces, a peasant leader aligned with Evo Morales, was apprehended in Cochabamba on October 6, 2026. The arrest is linked to investigations regarding 53 days of nationwide roadblocks that occurred during May and June.
Virreyra faces charges including attacking the security of the state, attacking public services, instigating public crime, and endangering transport security. The previous blockades impacted the supply of food, medicine, and fuel, and were associated with injuries and deaths.
Upon his arrival at the Special Force to Fight Crime (FELCC) facilities, Virreyra claimed the arrest is a form of ‘political persecution’ by the government, stating that his actions were intended to defend the people regarding fuel and food shortages. His lawyer, Juan Marcelo Argote, noted that while the client is willing to cooperate with the investigation, they are awaiting further details on the specific criminal charges and the subsequent judicial hearing to determine his legal status.
