NEMA urges flood preparedness and safety during rainy season

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued advisories regarding flood risks and public safety during the rainy season in Nigeria. In Benue State, NEMA Director-General Zubaida Umar urged the state government to strengthen preparedness and coordination due to the region's vulnerability caused by its topography, river systems, and seasonal rainfall.

To test response capabilities, NEMA conducted a full-scale flood response simulation exercise in Makurdi. The exercise aimed to evaluate the transition from early warning systems to community action and local, state, and federal coordination. This follows warnings from the Federal Ministry of Environment regarding potential flooding in several Benue communities.

Additionally, NEMA’s Chief Search and Rescue Officer, Mrs. Oluwadamilola Ajiginni, advised the public to prioritize safety by avoiding water currents and moving to higher ground if living in flood-prone areas. She emphasized the importance of using protective gear such as raincoats and umbrellas during heavy rainfall.
