Nemesi Marqués presents book on 19th-century Andorra and Urgell bishops
Historian Nemesi Marqués i Oste has presented his new book, ‘El Principat d’Andorra i els bisbes d’Urgell al segle XIX’, which examines the role of the Bishops of Urgell in maintaining Andorra’s institutional continuity during the 19th century.
The work analyzes how the political and legal shifts following the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era influenced the Principality and the Bishopric. It explores the interaction between Andorra’s internal context and external pressures, focusing on themes of liberties, royalism, and restoration.
One notable historical detail highlighted in the research involves a 19th-century military document by Ch. Blanchard. The document proposed potential territorial exchanges to pacify the region, such as trading the Val d’Aran for parts of Andorra between France and Spain. The book’s presentation in La Seu d’Urgell included Bishop Josep-Lluís Serrano Pentinat and Minister of Culture Mònica Bonell.
