Nemirseta sanatorium heritage protection under scrutiny

The State Commission of Cultural Heritage has raised concerns regarding the future of the Nemirseta sanatorium in Palanga, citing systemic issues in the cultural heritage protection system. A proposed tripartite agreement between the Department of Cultural Heritage, the Palanga City Municipality, and the sanatorium's manager suggests that the building's legal protection could be revoked. Under this model, the original remains would be demolished and replaced by a replica located further from the street.

While the object's manager and the Palanga municipality have approved the agreement, the Department of Cultural Heritage has not yet granted approval, noting that the contract's content requires clarification. The Commission expressed particular concern over the lack of comprehensive architectural and structural research. Despite a 2016 determination by the Palanga City Municipality's real estate cultural heritage assessment council regarding the necessity of such studies, no detailed measurements or documentation have been completed.

Commission Chair Vaidutė Ščiglienė stated that the commission is not proposing specific restoration solutions at this time. Instead, she emphasized that thorough research and data collection must be the first steps to objectively assess the building's condition and the extent of its remaining authentic properties before any decisions are made regarding its fate.
