Nemrut Dağı: Five-year scientific protection program launched

Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism has launched a comprehensive five-year scientific protection program for the Nemrut Dağı Tumulus, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The project aims to preserve the monumental statues of the Commagene Kingdom against erosion caused by wind, humidity, and freeze-thaw cycles.

Led by experts from the Gaziantep Restoration and Conservation Regional Laboratory Directorate, the initiative utilizes advanced technology to strengthen the stone structures. Key methods include applying nanotechnological solutions to reinforce stone surfaces and using lime-based mortars to fill cracks, preventing water ingress without altering the original appearance of the artifacts. This represents the first large-scale systematic conservation effort at the site since it was added to the UNESCO list in 1987.
