Neoenergia lights Brazil's oldest operating church in Igarassu

Neoenergia's Cultural Illumination Programme is installing new scenic lighting at the 16th‑century Igreja Matriz dos Santos Cosme e Damião, the oldest church in Brazil still in use, and at the Museu Histórico de Igarassu in Pernambuco. The project, now in its ninth edition, is being carried out with the municipality of Igarassu, the local prefecture and the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife.

The initiative includes educational actions for 13 municipal schools, reaching about 300 students through guided visits, workshops and heritage‑learning activities. Neoenergia aims to preserve historic architecture, promote local identity and generate tourism‑related jobs and income for the region, according to director Renata Chagas.
