Neohim AD fertilizer plant in Dimitrovgrad reports ammonia leak

The Regional Inspectorate on Environment and Water (RIOSV) – Haskovo has confirmed a visible ammonia leak from a pipeline at the Neohim AD fertilizer plant in Dimitrovgrad. During an inspection prompted by reports of a suffocating odor starting August 17, inspectors discovered the leak near a cooling tower for water cycle 4. The leak has caused soil and vegetation in the immediate area to turn black and has resulted in the emission of vapors, strong odors, and eye irritation.

Although the plant's production facilities are currently non-operational, the company continues to receive and load liquid ammonia via railway tankers. Additionally, on August 18, a third unsuccessful attempt was made to start the ‘New Nitric Acid’ workshop, necessitating emergency cooling and drainage procedures to secure the equipment.

RIOSV has issued a formal order requiring Neohim AD to implement technical measures to repair all leaks and gaps in the ammonia pipeline network by August 31.
