NEOS advocates for fund reforms and ‘Zukunftsdepot’ implementation

The political party NEOS is advocating for structural reforms to the insolvency compensation fund in Austria rather than increasing employer contributions. Following a report from the Court of Audit criticizing the fund for creating incorrect incentives, the coalition is debating new regulations. While some factions support raising the current 0.1 percent payroll contribution to replenish the depleted fund, NEOS argues for addressing issues such as the lack of a payout ceiling and the discrepancy between employer contributions and the high levels of compensation paid out to individuals.

Separately, NEOS has expressed support for the rapid implementation of the ‘Zukunftsdepot’ (Future Deposit) initiative. This proposal, championed by the ÖVP, aims to allow parents to invest up to 5,000 euros annually in a tax-free account for their children, supplemented by a 500-euro state grant at birth. The initiative has faced skepticism from the SPÖ-led Finance Ministry regarding its long-term financing and the feasibility of a 2027 launch, but NEOS maintains that the plan should proceed as agreed.
