Nepal and China flash floods leave hundreds dead and thousands missing

Severe flash floods and landslides in Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China have resulted in massive casualties and displacement. As of August 28, 2026, Nepalese authorities reported 579 deaths and 1,924 people missing, including 517 foreign nationals. In Tibet, China confirmed at least 5 deaths and 558 missing persons.

The disaster has caused widespread destruction, with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies estimating that approximately 93,000 people are in need of urgent assistance. UNICEF reported that at least 17,000 children are among those requiring humanitarian aid, noting that 18 schools were destroyed and 20 others were damaged.

Rescue operations are facing significant challenges due to destroyed roads, broken bridges, and disrupted telecommunications. Nepal has mobilized over 14,000 security personnel and is utilizing drones and helicopters to reach isolated areas. In a shift in policy, the Nepalese government has authorized limited assistance from international experts from India, China, Australia, and South Korea to aid in forensic identification and tunnel rescue efforts.
