Nepal and Nigeria manage significant domestic debt activities
Nepal's Public Debt Management Office (PDMO) has announced plans to raise Rs 100 billion in internal debt during the first quarter of the current fiscal year. This is part of a larger annual target to raise Rs 410 billion from the internal sector. The first quarter's target includes Rs 10 billion via treasury bills and Rs 90 billion through development bonds. The PDMO noted that the front-loaded strategy capitalizes on currently low market interest rates.
In Nigeria, the Debt Management Office reported that the federal government spent N3.14 trillion on domestic debt servicing in the first quarter of 2026. Interest payments accounted for approximately 94.6% of this total, with interest on federal government bonds representing N1.96 trillion and treasury bills totaling N1 trillion. Principal repayments on local-denominated promissory notes amounted to N169.68 billion. Nigeria's total public debt saw a marginal increase of 0.01% to N159.35 trillion during the same period.
