Nepal authorities launch new money laundering cases against Deepak Bhatta and Inam Sapkota
Authorities in Nepal have intensified investigations into high-profile money laundering and fraud cases. The Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DoMLI) filed a new case against businessman Deepak Bhatta at the Kathmandu District Court. The charges involve the misappropriation of approximately Rs 239.2 million through reinsurance brokerage at Himalayan Re-Insurance and an additional Rs 211.5 million related to money laundering.
Several other individuals have been named in the charges, including former executives of Himalayan Re-Insurance and members of Alliant Reinsurance Brokerage. This marks the fourth legal case brought against Bhatta, following previous proceedings regarding securities and banking offenses.
In a separate development, police have extended the remand of Inam Sapkota as part of an ongoing money laundering probe. Sapkota was arrested at Tribhuvan International Airport while attempting to travel to Delhi. Investigators are examining Sapkota’s alleged role as an intermediary and his connections to suspended Armed Police Force AIG Banshiraj Dahal and former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana.
