Nepal automobile sector seeks regulatory reform and flood relief

The Nepalese automobile industry is facing significant regulatory and environmental challenges. The Nepal Automobile Importers and Manufacturers Association (NAIMA) met with Industry Minister Deepak Kumar Sah to request reforms to agency registration regulations. NAIMA is seeking a clearer definition of “item” and the removal of a 0.5% security deposit requirement for every individual vehicle model under the same brand, arguing that current practices freeze liquidity and impose heavy financial burdens.

Simultaneously, the Nepal Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) met with the Department of Customs to discuss losses caused by devastating floods in Rasuwa. Many vehicles imported from China for the Dashain festive season were swept away, and over 500 vehicles remain stranded on the Chinese side of the border due to customs point closures. The Department of Customs stated that the government is developing a framework to determine relief and concessions for affected businesses through inter-ministerial discussions.
