Himlung Himal avalanche kills at least 4 and leaves many missing in Nepal

An avalanche struck the Himlung Himal base camp in Nepal's Manang district on Sunday, killing at least four people and leaving approximately 10 to 14 others missing. The victims, all Nepalese nationals, were mountain guides and support staff preparing the camp for the upcoming autumn climbing season involving foreign clients.

Rescue operations, led by alpinist Mingma G Sherpa and members of the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, have been severely hampered by extreme weather, including heavy snowfall and intense rain. While 10 survivors were successfully evacuated by helicopter, search efforts for the missing continue under dangerous conditions. The avalanche, described as a large plate avalanche, buried tents under approximately 4.2 meters of snow.

This disaster occurs as Nepal continues to recover from devastating glacial floods in August that killed over 1,400 people. Additionally, recent heavy rains across the country have caused further landslides and flooding, resulting in at least 21 additional deaths in various regions.
