Nepal-China border flood threat rises as new barrier lake forms

A newly formed barrier lake near the Nepal-China border poses a severe secondary threat to downstream communities following a catastrophic flood triggered by a glacier collapse. The lake, created by mudslides near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers, is estimated to hold approximately 2 million cubic meters of water. Authorities warn the lake is already overflowing and could experience a sudden breach, potentially inundating Gyirong Port and other areas along the Bhote Koshi River corridor.

The initial disaster, caused by a massive release of rock, ice, and debris, has already resulted in at least 362 deaths, with hundreds more people still unaccounted for. Among the missing are dozens of Australian nationals, including 35 listed by the Nepal Tourism Board.

In response to the rising water levels, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has urged residents, travelers, and rescue personnel to avoid riverbanks and high-risk zones. Chinese authorities have also issued warnings as aerial footage confirms the rapid expansion of the barrier lake.
