Nepal-China border rescue operations suspended after glacier collapse

Rescue operations in northern Nepal have been suspended following the formation and overflow of a lake created by a glacier collapse. The disaster, which occurred near the border with China, has resulted in at least 472 deaths and left more than 1,400 people missing.

Authorities in both China and Nepal issued warnings as water began to flow from the lake toward the Gyirong border crossing. The lake, which Chinese scientists describe as being 150 meters long and 40 to 50 meters deep, contains between 1.5 and 2 million cubic meters of water. Chinese officials have warned that an additional 3 million cubic meters of water could flow into the lake in the coming days, with the highest risk of overflow expected around September 1.

Local residents are fleeing to higher ground to escape potential flooding. The Nepalese army and Chinese authorities have temporarily halted search and rescue efforts to ensure the safety of responders as weather conditions remain unstable and ground conditions are further destabilized by rainfall.
