Nepal disaster leaves 70 Americans unaccounted for
A major natural disaster involving flash floods and mudslides in central Nepal has resulted in at least 1,000 deaths and left thousands missing. The disaster has devastated the landscape, destroying roads, bridges, and entire villages, and covering previously inhabited areas with deep layers of soil and rock.
The US State Department reports that approximately 70 Americans remain unaccounted for in the Nepal-China border region, though 18 Americans have reached safety. Rescuers face extreme operational challenges, including dangerous high-altitude conditions and the disappearance of familiar landmarks due to the altered terrain, which has hampered helicopter operations.
While the United States offered search-and-rescue assistance on the first day of the emergency, the Nepali government initially declined, stating its own agencies could manage the operations. In the United States, the Nepali diaspora in North Texas has gathered to grieve and raise funds for relief efforts.
