Nepal Electricity Authority moves to prevent winter load-shedding

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has announced that there will be no load-shedding during the upcoming winter season. To ensure an uninterrupted power supply, the authority has formed a five-member task force to manage electricity demand and monitor supply conditions, particularly in the Kathmandu Valley.

The measures follow devastating floods on August 26 in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river basins, which damaged more than 400 MW of hydropower capacity in the Rasuwa district. Currently, only 135 MW of generation capacity at the Chilime Hub remains connected to the national power system.

Newly appointed NEA Managing Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha stated that reconstructing damaged hydropower projects is a top priority. The authority is working on both immediate and long-term strategies, including restoring damaged transmission lines and exploring alternative energy sources to mitigate the impact of the dry season. Additionally, a separate committee has been established to conduct engineering studies for the Sunkoshi-3 Hydropower Project.
