Nepal Electricity Authority unions demand recovery of unpaid power bills

Five trade unions representing the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) have issued a three-day ultimatum to the NEA Board to recover billions of rupees in unpaid electricity dues. The outstanding debts stem from street lighting, dedicated lines, and trunk lines.

The unions—comprising Urjashil Karmachari Sangh, Karmachari Kalyan Parishad, Karmachari Union, Rastriya Karmachari Union, and Karmachari Sangh—submitted an 11-point demand. They requested action by August 17, coinciding with the NEA’s 41st anniversary.

The unions expressed concern that failure to recover these funds could weaken the authority’s financial stability and its ability to invest in infrastructure. They characterized the NEA as a strategic institution vital to Nepal’s energy security, domestic consumption, and cross-border power trade ambitions.
