Nepal establishes Climate Diplomacy Unit amid rising disaster risks
Nepal has established a dedicated Climate Diplomacy Unit within its Ministry of Foreign Affairs to institutionalize and coordinate the nation's international environmental initiatives. The decision comes as the country faces escalating climate-related risks, including devastating floods and landslides that have caused significant loss of life and infrastructure damage.
Following catastrophic flooding on August 26, which resulted in over 1,400 deaths and thousands of missing persons, scientific analysis by World Weather Attribution suggested that warming and permafrost degradation likely contributed to the slope failure that triggered the disaster. In response, the new diplomatic division will focus on climate justice, cooperation between mountainous nations, and the development of early warning systems.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly in New York to advocate for international support and climate justice. The ministry stated that the unit, headed by an under secretary, aims to pursue climate diplomacy as a long-term institutional priority rather than just participating in international conferences.
