Nepal explores hydropower exports to Sri Lanka via India

Nepal is exploring plans to export surplus hydropower to Sri Lanka by utilizing India’s national power grid as a transit route. This potential energy corridor was a key topic of discussion during the 19th Power Secretaries' Roundtable held in Mumbai.

To facilitate this trade, a proposed submarine electricity transmission link between India and Sri Lanka is being considered. Officials have already completed the grid code harmonization process between Nepal and India, and efforts are underway to harmonize grid codes between India and Sri Lanka to ensure technical compatibility.

For Nepal, the initiative represents an opportunity to monetize its vast water resources and expand its energy trade beyond existing bilateral agreements with India. For Sri Lanka, access to renewable hydropower could help diversify its energy supply and reduce reliance on expensive fossil fuel imports.
