Nepal flash floods kill 469 as search continues for over 1,000 missing

The death toll from a catastrophic flash flood in Nepal has reached 469, according to Nepalese police. The disaster was triggered when a massive volume of ice, mud, and rocks collapsed into a mountain river.

Search and rescue operations are currently underway in the valleys and mountains of Nepal and neighboring China to locate over one thousand missing persons. This includes 650 foreigners whose status remains uncertain. The Red Cross reports that entire villages have been destroyed and many communities are isolated due to collapsed bridges and impassable roads.

Despite international offers of assistance, the Nepalese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the country does not currently require foreign help for search and rescue operations, as domestic security agencies are managing the response. Meanwhile, Nepal and China have issued warnings of further flooding risks in the Himalayan region due to two lakes formed near the border that threaten to overflow.
