Nepal floods: 538 dead and 1,400 missing after Bhotekoshi river surge
Severe flooding and landslides triggered by the Bhotekoshi river in Nepal's Rasuwa district have resulted in at least 538 deaths. The National Authority for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (NDRRMA) reported that the highest death tolls occurred in the Chitwan district (221) and Nawalpur (134).
Approximately 1,400 people remain missing, including 517 foreigners. Among the missing are 45 military personnel, 28 police officers, 13 customs workers, and 15 immigration officials. The disaster also impacted the container transport industry, with over 400 trucks swept away.
Rescue operations are ongoing, involving roughly 15,000 security force members and 15 helicopters. To date, 3,742 people have been rescued, including 117 foreign tourists. In response to the crisis, Prime Minister Balendra Shah announced that the cabinet will donate one month's salary to the Disaster Rescue Fund to support reconstruction efforts.
