Nepal floods: 8-year-old boy reunited with mother after surviving by climbing tree
In the wake of devastating floods in Nepal, 8-year-old Zoyal Ghale has been reunited with his mother after surviving by climbing a tree in a forest. The boy was originally at school in the Rasuwa district when the floods struck, causing massive destruction. Ghale was airlifted to a hospital in Kathmandu with a fractured leg and facial injuries.
His mother, 28-year-old Matti Maya Tamang, had been searching through various shelters, fearing both of her sons had perished. The reunion was made possible by Reuters journalist Sahana Bajracharya, who encountered the boy at a small hospital in Nuwakot. After the boy agreed to be filmed in hopes of finding his family, the journalist provided her contact information, allowing the mother to locate him.
The floods and subsequent landslides in Nepal and Tibet have caused significant casualties, with reports indicating at least 580 deaths and thousands missing. UNICEF has noted that at least 17,000 children have been affected in the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts, and is working with the government to assist in family reunifications.
