Nepal floods and landslides leave 384 people missing

A devastating natural disaster has struck the Rasuwa region in northern Nepal, following an earthquake and subsequent landslides that triggered immediate flooding of the Bhote Koshi river on August 26.

The Nepal Tourism Board has confirmed that 384 people are currently missing. This group includes 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens. Among the missing foreigners are 105 Indian nationals, 17 Malaysians, 12 British citizens, four South Africans, three Americans, one Australian, and one Dutch citizen. The nationalities of 111 other missing individuals have not yet been officially confirmed.

Nepali Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal reported to parliament that the sequence began with an earthquake at approximately 8:37 a.m. local time, which caused massive landslides and flash floods. Authorities are coordinating efforts with China, as the disaster has also caused significant damage on the Chinese side of the border. Search operations are ongoing, with several Nepali police officers, soldiers, and customs officials also reported missing.
