Nepal floods and landslides leave 469 dead

The death toll from flash floods and landslides in northern Nepal has risen to 469, marking the country’s most severe disaster since the 2015 earthquake. Experts believe the flooding was triggered by a glacier collapse, an event so violent it caused a 5.2 magnitude earthquake and widespread landslides.

A powerful torrent of water, mud, and debris surged across the mountain border between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday morning. Surveillance footage from the Chinese side captured a wave several meters high engulfing a six-story building in seconds.

In the Trishuli region, roads are buried under thick mud and vehicles remain partially submerged. While rescue teams using helicopters continue to search for survivors and deliver aid, police have barricaded access to high-risk areas near riverbeds due to warnings of further flooding. Amidst the destruction, hundreds of people have been rescued, including most of the 450 individuals who were trapped in a tunnel in Trishuli.
