Nepal floods death toll rises to 469 following glacier collapse
The death toll from devastating floods in Nepal has risen to 469, according to the Nepal Police. The disaster, which occurred near the border with Tibet, has left hundreds missing and over 1,500 people injured.
Chitwan has been identified as the most severely impacted district with 178 fatalities, followed by Nawalparasi East and Gorkha. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) reports that 977 people remain unaccounted for, including 517 foreigners.
Scientific analysis from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) suggests the catastrophe was triggered by a glacier collapse rather than an earthquake. Rescue operations involve over 13,000 security personnel, including the army and police. However, the United Nations has warned that access to the most affected regions is severely hindered by destroyed bridges, roads, and collapsed communication networks.
