Nepal forms monitoring mechanism for national pride projects

The Department of Water Resources and Irrigation (DoWRI) has established a special monitoring mechanism to track the physical and financial progress of national pride projects. This initiative aims to address issues where projects have exceeded deadlines, missed targets, or faced unresolved construction challenges.

Under the new system, the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation and the DoWRI will jointly monitor on-site progress, financial status, construction schedules, and major obstacles. The mechanism is designed to be result-oriented, identifying problems, assigning responsibility to relevant agencies, setting resolution deadlines, and ensuring follow-up to strengthen accountability.

The initial phase will focus on six major projects: the Mahakali (Third) Irrigation Project, Rani Jamara Kulariya Irrigation Project, Babai Irrigation Project, Bheri-Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project, Sikta Irrigation Project, and the Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project. Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has scheduled a meeting with project chiefs to review progress and develop future action plans.
