Nepal government prioritizes domestic materials for public infrastructure

The government has approved the Guidelines on the Promotion and Use of Domestic Products in Public Procurement, 2083, to prioritize locally produced materials in infrastructure and public projects. The policy aims to reduce reliance on imports, expand markets for domestic industries, and generate employment.

Key provisions include the use of technically suitable alternatives to bitumen- and asphalt-based road surfacing, such as concrete roads made with domestic cement and local stone. Infrastructure designs for roads, bridges, and buildings must not mandate foreign materials if suitable domestic alternatives exist.

In government buildings, the directive prioritizes local marble, stone, slate, and tiles over imported granite. It also extends to electrical installations, furniture, sanitary fittings, and decorative works. While promoting local products, the guidelines mandate that all materials must meet strict quality, safety, durability, and technical standards.
