Nepal hydropower infrastructure crippled by devastating floods

Devastating floods triggered by a glacial collapse on the China-Nepal border have severely damaged Nepal’s hydropower infrastructure, causing significant energy shortages and loss of life. The disaster, which occurred on August 26, has impacted at least 12 hydropower projects and damaged solar power plants and transmission lines, knocking out a substantial portion of the national grid's capacity.

Reports indicate that hundreds of billions of Nepali rupees in losses are expected. The human toll is severe, with over 1,400 people reported dead in Nepal and Tibet, and hundreds of workers still listed as missing. The Independent Power Producers Association of Nepal has noted discrepancies in government records regarding the number of missing personnel trapped in tunnels or power houses.

In response to the crisis, India has approved the expedited export of up to 654 megawatts of electricity to Nepal. This supply will be transmitted for 18 hours per day until December 31 to help stabilize the country's power requirements. The event has prompted a national debate in Nepal regarding the country's reliance on hydropower and the potential need to diversify into solar energy as climate change accelerates glacial melting in the Himalayas.
